Marvel-A-Thon Phase Two Update

Welcome back my lovely blogger friends…. I’m here again with an update of how my readathon is progressing. I’m very excited and relieved to tell you that I have finished Phase II of the Marvel-A-Thon and already breezing through the books for the final phase. You can click here if you want to know more about my Phase I update.

This has been a challenging part of this month. It’s possible that I wasn’t very excited about the prompts in this phase and I was quite dejected that I might go into a slump and not be able to finish it at all. But, thanks to some amazing motivation from Liz @ Travel in Retrospect, I was able to push through and complete it.

Iron Man 3

Read a book that will challenge you.

I don’t remember ever reading a poetry collection before, so the format itself was quite challenging for me. This one also dealt with very heavy topics like sexual assault, intense love and loss, misogyny, sexism and ultimately, empowerment. The first and last sections titled The Hurting and the Healing were the ones I liked the most. They made me very emotional and I think the messages were very short but thought provoking. However, there was also a lot of repetition of the themes in different poems and the whole structure of the book didn’t seem very cohesive at times. I would still recommend this collection to anyone who enjoys modern poetry or just wants to read an important book.

Rating: ⭐⭐⭐

Dark World

Read a book that involves siblings.

My initial choice was to read Children of Blood and Bone but I decided to read Twinkle instead. It definitely helped with my mood, made me very happy and cheerful and was just an overall fun read. Do checkout my full review here.

Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Winter Soldier

Read a book where the main character is a villain or anti-hero.

I was going to read Vicious for this prompt, even got around to 10 pages but just felt like abandoning it for now.

Guardians of the Galaxy

Read a book set in, written in, or involving the 80’s.

I just accidentally happened upon this book and realized this fit the challenge perfectly. The story of Liza and Annie, who develop such a beautiful friendship before falling in love is amazingly written. It tackles the concepts of teenage love, confusion about sexuality and dealing with homophobia in a time when it was very common, very expertly and delicately. I also think it was very brave of the author to write an ownvoices f/f romance in that time and that gives a very authentic feel to the story.  I think everyone should read it considering it’s one of the earliest queer romances with an optimistic ending and hence, has a special place in the history of YA.

Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Age of Ultron

Read a book involving an AI in some way.

I really wanted to read Illuminae Files but this may not be the right time. Skipped.

Ant-Man

Read a book involving a heist or thieves.

I was always going to skip this one because I don’t really know any heist novels except Six of Crows and I’ve already read that a couple of times. I did think about The Lies of Locke Lamora but ultimately decided to skip.

I’m already enjoying Phase III but I might still need all your good luck because this is going to be a long ride!!!
