Best and Worst Series of 2019 Book Tag

When I saw this tag on My Reading Escape blog, I had so much fun reading it and knew that I had to do it immediately. There can’t be a more apt way to almost end the year on the blog than talking about my favorite series of the year. And as someone who loves series way more than standalones, this is just perfect. So, let me get started right away…

1. What is the best series that you caught up with this year that is still a work in progress?

I finally listened to all my dear friends decided to plunge into this grimdark fantasy world and what can I say that hasn’t already been said. The Poppy War and The Dragon Republic completely blew my mind and I’m so glad that I finally got caught up with the series. Can’t wait to see what will happen in The Burning God.

2. What is the best work in progress series that you are still catching up with?

I’ve just managed to read Jade City till now which I absolutely loved, and Jade War is currently sitting on my shelf just glaring at me. I really want to read it but I guess I’m just scared. Soon… very soon…

3. What was your favorite first book in a series this year?

Frankly, there are just way too many first books in a series that I read this year which I loved, but I don’t wanna list them all. So, I’m gonna leave you all with my favorite YA fantasy debut There Will Come a Darkness (which was just utterly perfect) and favorite adult fantasy debut Blood of an Exile which completely blew my mind. Both these books have a great ensemble of characters and I’m totally in love with them all.

4. What is a first book in a series you read this year that you think should have just been a standalone, not a series?

American Royals

As someone who always wants books to continue as series, it’s very unusual for me to want a book to be a standalone. Probably a very unpopular opinion around here, but I didn’t enjoy American Royals and hated the cliffhanger and wished it would just get over.

5. What is your most over-hyped series of the year?

While I agree that this series is entertaining and I had some fun reading The Queen of Nothing, I still think it’s overhyped and I have never felt the magic in it that everyone else does.

6. What is a series that you DNFed this year?

It’s not the series but the first book of the series that I DNFd, which makes me utterly sad because I want to promote diverse books so much. But I just couldn’t get into this one. Maybe I’ll give it another chance in the future.

7. What was your favorite series finale of the year?

Definitely The Shadow Glass. It’s just the perfect bittersweet ending I wanted and it was beautiful.

8. What was the biggest cliffhanger you had in a series this year?

The ending of A House of Rage and Sorrow is not exactly a cliffhanger but it ends with a bang (literally) and I just can’t even imagine what’s gonna happen next.

9. What is your favorite spinoff series you read this year?

This was my most highly anticipated spinoff of the year and Leigh didn’t disappoint. King of Scars has darling Nikolai and that’s all I really needed.

10. What is your most anticipated next book in a series that you read this year that will come out next year?

I read both Shadow of the Fox and Soul of the Sword this year, and I’m so in love with this series. Night of the Dragon is definitely my most highly anticipated series ender of 2020.

11. What is your most anticipated series to catch up with next year based on what you read in that series this year?

I only managed to read Three Parts Dead this year and thought maybe I could finish Two Serpents Rise too, but let’s see. I definitely have a lot to catch up on in this series, and I’m so excited because I’m already in love with this world.

12. What is your favorite series that you finished this year?

I read the complete Bone Witch trilogy this year and it’s my top favorite of 2019. Rin Chupeco mesmerized me with her words and this has one of my favorite cast of characters ever.

13. What is your favorite episodic series of the year?

I’m not really someone who reads episodic series (I don’t even know if I understand the term correctly).

14. What is a series that you finally bailed on after holding onto it for a long time?

I have a few series that I’ve been reading for a very long time, but I still haven’t abandoned any.

15. What is the series you were most surprised that you liked this year?

It’s not really surprising that I would love a series based on the Mahabharata but the extent to which I fell in love with this trilogy, especially Govinda came as a surprise to me too. I just couldn’t believe an author had reimagined my favorite epic in such an original manner and that too as a debut. Hats off to Krishna for her writing.

I’m not tagging anyone but if you are a fan of series like I am, please feel free to do this tag and share your thoughts with me….!!!

  1. Ahh, almost all of these books are books that I have on my TBR or ones that I’ve read!
I’m so excited to read Jade City! I promised to read it before the end of the year, and the deadline is sooo near. I just know that I’ll love it based on what everyone says about it!
I’m so glad that you enjoyed There Will Come a Darkness! I added it to my TBR when it came out, but I was gonna remove it because I hadn’t heard anything else. Knowing how you feel about it, I’ll definitely have to read it now!
I definitely think that TCP is overhyped in a way. I think The Cruel Prince is a genuinely good novel. I think what happened is that Holly Black’s publishers saw how well The Cruel Prince did, so they rushed her to put out the next two books on short notice (just look at how quickly TWK and QoN released!), and that’s why the series’ potential was ruined.
Technically, I also “DNF’d” We Hunt the Flame, but it was more like I was trying to buddy read it with a friend, but she was having a hard time with it, so I had to put it down indefinitely! I wonder whether our buddy read is still on, because I think SHE permanently DNF’d it (or at least won’t pick it up for a while). meanwhile I’m impatient to continue WHTF :”)
I read The Bone Witch this year, and though I only gave it three stars, I think that the rest of the series has potential! I’m excited to continue on with the series, especially to see how Tea and Kalen’s relationship progresses!

    1. I didn’t think Jade City was going to be a favorite, but I just picked because my friends said it’s a bit like the old kung fu action movies, and I couldn’t resist … and the action sequences really are very cinematic and I loved it all so much .. Hope you will too 😍😍

I’ve read some pretty mixed reviews about There Will come a Darkness but I think I read it at the perfect time.. I completely fell in love.. these days I seem to just love books with ensemble casts and this book is quite good at multiple POVs …
Hmm.. I think you are right … TCP was pretty different from the other YA fantasy I was reading at the time and that’s probably the reason for it’s success… but it was definitely super hyped by fans.. could have influenced everything else that happened after… I thought Wicked King still had the same feel as TCP, but QoN felt too happy and sweet and easy… she could have easily written a longer book and tied everything up more properly.. but who knows what obligations she was working under 🤷‍♀️
Hmm.. I hope you’ll get to read WHTF even if the buddy read is off… all my friends who did completely fell in love.. I seem to be the only holdout who couldn’t get through… but maybe I’ll give it another try, closer to the sequel’s release…
I think I remember you not liking Bone Witch like I did .. I don’t know if it’ll get better for you, but I loved books 2 and 3 a lot 😍😍 and all the relationships in the trilogy are my favorite… I really hope you’ll fall in love with it all so that I can gush along with you 😂😂👍👍

      1. ahh, i just started reading it today, and i already love it! that one action scene i read was *chef’s kiss*
hmm, actually i don’t know anything about There Will Come a Darkness, and I’m excited to go in blind. i really do hope that I love it!
haha, i once saw someone say that you don’t need to read TWK and after reading TCP, you can just skip to QoN, and honestly… i feel like they were right? like, i think the only thing significant that happened in TWK was the ending. and maybe holly black just wanted to give her readers what they wanted? i know that some people absolutely adored the way QoN unfolded, so maybe she was writing it for them. i do still think that the main reason the series went downhill (at least for me) is the fact that her publishers urged her to put the books out quickly. i mean, she put out twk and qon in the same year? i find it hard to believe that someone could write quality books in that time.
Ahh, hope you love it if you give it another try! i’ve heard really mixed things about WHTF, but I actually really liked what I’ve read so far. I should really just leave my friend behind and read it without her because I’m so impatient already, HAHAHA. (omg i’m a bad influence)
i have a feeling that The Heart Forger will be better! I’ve also heard amazing things about The Shadow Glass! And I really hope so too ❤ would love to gush about it with you :))

        1. Awww that’s amazing 😍😍😍 Carry on and I’m sure you’ll see more twists and turns ahead…
I think you are right.. QoN was fan service.. and I’m happy for those who really enjoyed it because it atleast worked for a huge part of the fandom… maybe the publishers wanted to go all in with the love story because that’s what all the fans seemed to love… I wasn’t one of them and and maybe that’s why whatever little of the rest was there in the book disappointed me…
I’m never good at holding back during buddy reads 😂😂😂 i always finish first and then just wait … it’s probably irritating to the other person 😜😜😜
Heart Forger is awesome and Shadow Glass is surely my favorite YA finale in a while ❤️❤️❤️

  2. You have to read Jade War, if only so you can suffer like the rest of us knowing the last book won’t come out until 2021! There Will Come a Darkness missed my TBR this year, hoping I can get to it next year! I also want to read more of the Craft Sequence, I’ve only read Three Parts Dead so far….

    1. I hope we both enjoy the next book in Craft Sequence…. !!!! And I’ll definitely look forward to your thoughts on There Will Come a Darkness…
I didn’t know Jade Legacy wasn’t coming till 2021 😳😳😳 I’m definitely not gonna read Jade War yet then… let me just postpone my suffering for a little bit more 😂😂😂😂

  4. Awesome tag! I really have to do it at some point (I’m behind on so many tags haha!) And I’m so happy you enjoyed King of Scars so much, I sadly stopped after 200 pages because it didn’t feel like it had any certain plot line despite Nikolai dealing with the curse… But can you answer me something I’ve been wondering ever since: do Nikolai and Zoya end up together? Because I was really rooting for them! Happy reading!

    1. Haha I totally understand Jane… I guess I was just too enamored by the characters so I didn’t care what was even happening 😂😂 And there is a hint of a developing romance between them, we know that but I don’t remember them telling each other yet… that’s hopefully an important subplot in the sequel 😊😊
Happy reading to you too !!!

        1. You can probably wait before you try to read KoS again because Leigh said the sequel won’t be coming till 2021… after the kind of ending it had, it’s an awful long time to wait and I don’t want you to go through it 😂😂😂

  5. I’m so happy I finally read The poppy war this year as well, will definitely be on my favourite list!
I really need to pick up Jade city though! And also wasn’t a fan of American royals.. Don’t even know why I finished the book haha..
    Loved reading this!
