I can’t believe it’s already been half a year and I have spent all of it with my parents in India. This has meant that my reading has slowed down a bit because my family hates if I spend all my time reading, also abetted by the fact that the pandemic is not in control here and I’m just trying to live in denial. But I think it’s good to remind myself that I have read some wonderful books this year which have given me joy in these difficult times, and share all that happiness with you all. So, let’s get started with some colorful graphs.
The genre breakup doesn’t seem to have changed much, except maybe the SFF categories have gone up. This is because I am enjoying exploring new worlds and don’t want to spend any time irl. To be honest, I expected that my fantasy count may have crossed the 50% mark.
I only read ebooks, and sometimes listen to the audios, so this stat is completely unsurprising. But I have recently won two physical book giveaways, so let’s see if I will read them anytime soon.
I’m glad that I am continuing my track of reading some backlist books this year as well. I obviously have many many more older books I need to pick up, but let’s just keep going slowly for now. I can’t deny I love my new releases and ARCs.
I guess I am sticking to reading books which are adventurous because they offer the most escapism. But I can’t always stay away from the reflective nature of the slow paced books which I seem to be attracted towards these days. The emotional ones may be low in number for now, but I am sure I will catch up soon.
Not much change here. I am continuing to read the more mid size books and not picking up any of the chonks I own.
My 5 stars definitely seemed to have increased in count this quarter and I am so happy because I read some beautiful and unforgettable books. Hope this streak continues and I add more favorites to my list.
Mid Year Freakout Tag
1. Best book you’ve read so far in 2021:
I have actually have quite a few more favorites this year, but two of the most brilliant epic fantasies I read were The Jasmine Throne and Black Sun. Both with lush worlds, fantastic characters and thrilling plots, which I can’t wait to explore more of.
2. Best sequel you’ve read so far in 2021:
A War of Swallowed Stars is technically a finale and not sequel, but it’s the best conclusion of a series I have read in a long time. It’s just completely utterly perfect.
3. New release you haven’t read yet, but want to:
I have been waiting to read these two but Luck of the Titanic has a huge waitlist in my library and I have yet to get it. But I just got The Bombay Prince and and hopefully I will read it this week.
4. Most anticipated release for the second half of the year:
There are many books I am very excited to read but Fury of a Demon concludes one of my favorite fantasy trilogies, Dragons of Terra, and I can’t wait to see how the author finishes this off.
5. Biggest disappointment:
It’s not that I had too many hopes from A Court of Silver Flames, but despite that, I found many elements in the book just repetitive and boring. There was hardly anything surprising about what happened.
6. Biggest surprise:
I just expected that A Psalm for the Wild-Built will be a quiet sci-fi novella, but I didn’t expect it to be so profound and it felt like it was written just for me. Very heart touching.
7. Favorite new author (debut or new to you):
I didn’t even know about this book but The Councillor has quickly become a favorite debut of the year till date, and I can’t tell you enough about how much I adored the writing in this one.
8. Newest fictional crush:
I don’t know if I have a crush on Zhou Zishu and Wen KeXing or the actors playing these characters, Zhang Zhehan and Gong Jun. I just know I am completely in love with this show and both the guys are very very cute.
9. Newest favorite character:
I did encounter Asmodeus last year when I read the novella, but binge reading the Dominion of the Fallen trilogy made me love this stabby husband even more.
10. Book that made you cry:
Undoubtedly, LangYa Bang or Nirvana in Fire. I wept so many times while reading this story, I have lost count. It’s so beautifully tragic and emotional, that I can’t even describe how much I am in love with it.
11. Book that made you happy:
I haven’t been reading much of romance at all these days, but picking up Role Model and coming back to the world of the Game Changers was so much fun. And meeting Ilya Rozanov, if only in small doses, made me very very happy and it’s horrible that I have to wait till next year to continue his and Shane’s story.
12. Favorite Book to Movie you’ve seen this year:
I won’t deny that I am obsessed with Word of Honor, and if I hadn’t watched this in the past 2 weeks, my answer would have been WoH or maybe even Shadow and Bone. But then I did watch Nirvana in Fire, and it’s very difficult to match it. While not everything in the book can be shown in the drama, NiF is still near perfect with it’s brilliant plotting, excellent performances by every actor, gorgeous production design and cinematography, and music that keeps haunting me. I’ve watched it twice in two weeks and I probably will again.
13. Favorite post you’ve written this year:
I actually have written quite a few posts this year like 40 Books by Asian Authors on my TBR and Fantasies with Inspiration from Around the World, which I really enjoyed researching and writing. But my favorite has to be my Favorite Book Recs for PRIDE Month post, and I am very upset that it didn’t get enough love.
14. Most beautiful book you’ve bought so far this year (or received):
I actually won this in a giveaway and it’s so so beautiful, that I keep it right next to me and keep looking at it at all times.
15. What books do you need to read by the end of the year?:
I bought The Gutter Prayer and Legacy of Ash a while ago when they were on sale, and still haven’t read them, so I hope I will atleast start one of these trilogies this year.
And I have heard so much about Jin Yong, his wuxia novels, Condor Heroes – that I really really want to try out the Legend of the Condor Heroes series. And I want to read atleast one book before I watch the drama (yet to decide which version I should watch… god, there are so many).
16. Favorite book community member:
To be honest, I haven’t been very good at engaging with anyone in the community this year. But there are two people I have to mention who have been with me through these tough times, just being good friends and indulging me in all my obsessions. Thank you so much Dany and Prachi for being a part of my life and I truly cherish our daily chats.
Five Stars Predictions – Old and New
These 6 books were my 5 star predictions for the second quarter of 2021 and I am surprised that I actually managed to read 5 of these books. While AWoSS and The Jasmine Throne were as expected 5 stars, A Master of Djinn, Rising Like a Storm and Rule of Wolves were 4 stars which I thoroughly enjoyed. I still haven’t gotten to The Chosen and the Beautiful, but maybe it’ll still be 4-5 star in the future.
Now, here come my 5 star predictions for the next quarter of this year. I am very confident that some of these will become my all time favorites, and I can’t wait.
And that’s it for today…!!! If you’ve reached here, it means you have read this very long post of mine with patience, and I thank you from the bottom of my heart for being supportive of my blog and motivating me to write more. Hope you all had a good first half of 2021 and here’s wishing you an even better second half.
